20th Century Asian Pear
Juicy, sweet, mild flavored fruit is crisp like an apple. Early to mid-August in Central CA. Keeps well. Easy to grow, heavy bearing small tree. 300-400 hours. Self-fruitful or pollenized. by Shinseiki, Bartlett, or other.
Chojuro Asian Pear
Russeted golden brown skin. Crisp like an apple when ripe. Harvest mid-August in Central CA. 450 hours. Pollenized by Hosui, Shinko, or other pear.
Hosui Asian Pear
Consistently rated the best-tasting Asian pear at Dave Wilson Nursery fruit tastings. Large, juicy, sweet, flavorful, refreshing, crisp like an apple. Brownish-orange russeted skin. Harvest early to mid-August in Central CA. 300-400 hours. Pollenized by Shinko, Chojuro, Bartlett, or 20th Century.
Kikusui Asian Pear
Juicy, sweet, yellow-skinned fruit - crisp like an apple when ripe. Superb fresh eating, one of the best. Easy to grow. Keeps well. Mid-August in Central CA. 450 hours. Partly self-fruitful or pollenized by Ishiiwase or 20th Century.
Shinko Asian Pear
Late ripening - September in Central CA - and excellent quality. Juicy, sweet, flavorful, refreshing, crisp like an apple. Golden brown russeted skin. Shows fire blight resistance. 450 hours. Pollenized by Hosui, Chojuro, Kikusui, Bartlett
Shinseiki Asian Pear
Juicy, sweet, refreshing, crisp like an apple. Easy to grow. Keeps well. Harvest late July/early August in Central CA. Bright yellow skin. Vigorous, heavy bearing (usually by 2nd year). 250-300 hours. Self-fruitful.
Tsu Li (Chinese) Asian Pear
Early bloom, pollenizer for Ya Li in warm winter climates. Juicy, crisp, greenish-yellow pear-shaped fruit. Vigorous tree. Harvest in September with Ya Li. 300 hours. Pollenized by Ya Li.
Ya Li (Chinese) Asian Pear
High quality greenish-yellow, pear-shaped fruit is juicy, sweet, refreshing, crisp like an apple when ripe. Vigorous tree. Harvest in September in Central CA. 300 hours. Pollenized by Tsu Li.
Contorted Jujube
“Chinese date.” Interesting ornamental form: twisted, contorted branching. Round-shaped edible fruits similar to Li. Fruits reddish-brown when ripe, eaten firm and crunchy or room-dried to date-like chewy sweetness. Early fall harvest. Attractive, easy-to-grow tree: hardy, drought resistant, virtually pest and disease free. Requires long, hot summer. Very low chilling requirement. Partly self-fruitful or pollenized by Lang.
GA 866 Jujube
“Chinese date.” Outstanding, two-inch elongated fruit is exceptionally sweet with apple-like flavor. Ripens mid-autumn. Partly self-fruitful or pollenize with another jujube. 200 hours. USDA Zones 5-9.
Honey Jar Jujube
“Chinese date.” Extremely sweet, small to medium sized round fruit. Compact tree-form does well in drought conditions. Party self-fruitful. 200 hours USDA Zones 5-9.
Shanxi Li Jujube
“Chinese date.” Largest of the popular jujube varieties (over 2 inches), round shape. Apple-like flavor, sweetens when dried. Self-fruitful and a good pollenizer for other varieties. 200 hours. USDA Zones 5-9.
Sugar Cane Jujube
Round fruit is smaller than Li. Sweet, crunchy flesh. Tree is precocious, hardy, drought resistant, virtually pest and disease free. Requires long, hot summer. Very low chill requirement. Partly self-fruitful.
Pakistan Fruiting Mulberry
Morus alba 'Pakistan'
Long (3 inches), firm, red to black, sweet fruit. Non-staining juice. Month-long early summer harvest. Fruit used fresh and for pies, jams and jellies. Large, vigorous, disease-resistant tree.
Donut (Stark Saturn) White Peach
Also called Saucer or Peento peach. Unique white-fleshed fruit with a sunken center (shaped like a doughnut). Sweet, with a mild flavor described by some as almond-like. Ripens late June/early July in Central CA. Estimated chilling requirement 200-300 hours. Self-fruitful.
Galaxy White Peach
Saucer style white-fleshed peach, similar to Stark Saturn but larger, 6 oz fruit. Cream skin, blushed red. Sweet, flavorful flesh. Developed by USDA research station in San Joaquin Valley, CA. Ripens late June. Self-fruitful. 450 hours. USDA Zones 5-10.
Tropic Snow White Peach
Delicious white freestone for warm-winter climates: balanced acid and sugar, superb flavor. Harvest begins mid-June in Central CA, about three weeks before Babcock. Showy blossoms in spring. From Florida, introduced in 1988. Very low winter chilling requirement, about 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
Chocolate Persimmon
Small to medium size, oblong, bright red skin. Sweet, spicy, firm, brown flesh, superb flavor - the choice of connoisseurs. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
Coffeecake Persimmon
Unique spicy sweet flavor that instantly evokes images of cinnamon pastry, hot coffee and morning sunshine. Coffeecake ripens about the same time as Chocolate and about three weeks to one month earlier than Fuyu. Coffeecake Persimmon is non-astringent and can be eaten while still firm. Hardy, attractive tree, practically free of pests and disease. Estimated chilling requirement: 200 hours or less. Another persimmon variety required as a pollenizer. Gosho or Chocolate are the best pollenizers for Coffeecake.
Fuyu (Imoto) Persimmon
Large size. Compared to Jiro, Imoto is more square and flattened. Non-astringent. (Good eating while still hard.) Self- fruitful. 200 hours. USDA Zones 7-10.
Fuyu (Jiro) Persimmon
(“Apple Persimmon”) Medium size, flat shape, still crunchy when ripe, non-astringent. Cool or hot climate. Hardy, attractive tree, practically pest free. Fall harvest. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
Giant Fuyu Persimmon
Larger, not as flat as Fuyu. Crunchy when ripe like Fuyu. Sweet, flavorful, non astringent. Easy to grow, cool or hot climates. Fall harvest. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
Hachiya Persimmon
Large, deep orange-red, acorn-shaped. Hot summer required to mature the fruit. Sweet, flavorful, astringent until soft ripe. Mature fruit can be frozen and thawed to ripen. Productive, ornamental tree. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
Izu Persimmon
Very sweet, tasty, non-astringent fruit ripens about three weeks before Fuyu. Medium to large size, round shape. Relatively small tree, good choice for backyard persimmon. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
Maru Persimmon
Medium size, orange-red, round fruit. Beautiful glossy skin. If cross pollenized, flesh is dark cinnamon color and seeded. Very sweet, rich flavor, excellent quality. 200 hours. Self-fruitful.
Lady Finger Grape
Large, elongated, light green thick skin, seeded. Valued for distinctive appearance and excellent tart-sweet flavor. Late season (fall) harvest. 100 hours. Cane or spur prune.
Hall's Hardy Flowering Almond
Prunus dulcis 'Hall's Hardy'
Beautiful, profuse, pink flowers. Late blooming. Adapted to cold climates. Vigorous. Kernel more bitter than commercial almonds. 800 hours. Self-fruitful.
Double White Flowering Peach
Prunus persica 'Double White'
Spectacular, large, snow-white double blossoms. One of the showiest of all flowering trees. Fast growth to 20 by 20 ft. Prune after bloom for best results the following year.
Early Pink Flowering Peach
Prunus persica 'Early Pink'
Very early, bright pink blossoms. Used for Chinese New Year in Southern California. Fast growth to 20 by 20 ft. Prune after bloom and again in early summer for profuse bloom the following spring.
Early Red Flowering Peach

Vivid purplish-red double flowers, very early. Used in So. Calif. for Chinese New Year. Small, sweet, light green-skinned fruit. Fast growth to 20 by 20 ft. Prune after bloom for best results next year.
