California's leading dried plum variety, French Improved is a dark red-to-purplish fruit with tender, dark amber flesh. Medium-sized and egg-shaped, this fine-textured prune has a rich, sweet flavor. French Improved ripens in the 2nd to 3rd week of August and dries with an average 3:1 drying ratio. The vigorous tree has an upright growth habit. 800 chilling hours required.
Muir Beauty is an excellent dried plum that ripens 2 to 3 weeks earlier than the common variety, French Improved. The dried fruit is larger with fewer wrinkles than French Improved. Muir Beauty prune is purple-rose in color with light flesh that retains its golden color after drying. In taste tests, this prune is described as having a thick, meaty texture and a pleasant well-balanced fruity flavor. The tree is a vigorous grower with an upright form and exhibits more precocity than French. A good pollenizer for Tulare Giant, Muir Beauty is self-fertile and produces heavy crops with little preharvest drop. The fruit hangs well on the tree and can be mechanically harvested. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 15547)
Released by U.C. Davis in 2000, Sutter prune is a very high-quality prune with a complex, fruity flavor. Similar in appearance to French Improved, Sutter dried plum is 15-20% larger and offers a higher sugar content than the industry standard. Sutter is an oval-shaped, dark purple plum that ripens in the 1st to 2nd week of August and is fully self-fruitful. The fruit hangs well on the tree and can be mechanically harvested. The tree is precocious, vigorous and consistently productive. This cultivar is not recommended with peach rootstocks. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 12398)
Tulare Giant is a very large, early-maturing plum that bears heavily and is particularly well-suited for the fresh prune market. The fruit is dark purple under a greyish, waxy epidermal bloom. The tree shows considerable precocity and a vigorous growth habit. Tulare Giant requires Muir Beauty as a pollenizer. This cultivar is not recommended with peach rootstocks. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 12224)
