Pluot® Interspecific Plums
Pluot® interspecific plum hybrids, the most famous of the new Zaiger Interspecifics, are complex Prunus crosses, primarily of plum and apricot (P. salicina, P. armeniaca). Unlike plumcots, which are simple plum x apricot crosses, Pluot® interspecific plums were developed by the Zaigers through intricate hybridizing; several generations of crosses are typically required to create these new fruits.
Pluot® interspecifics have predominantly plum parentage and smooth skins like plums.
The complex, intense flavors of Pluot® and Aprium® cultivars are unique to interspecifics, much like a blend of fruit juices where the mixture is an improvement over any of the separate ingredients. Additionally, the sugar content of our interspecifics is much higher than in any standard plum or apricot, yielding fruit of incomparable sweetness.
These delicious new types of fruit provide new opportunities for the tree fruit grower.
We introduced Flavor Delight Aprium® interspecific apricot and Flavor Supreme and Flavor Queen Pluot® interspecific plums to the home garden nursery trade in 1989. The Pluot® interspecifics described on this page, along with the new interspecific Zaiger rootstocks - Citation, Atlas and Viking - represent the most advanced fruit varietal development in the world today.
Pluot® and Aprium® are registered trademarks of Zaiger Genetics, Modesto, California.

Named for its strong, "friendly" pollen, the Amigo 1 Pluot® blooms early in the season and matures just before Flavor Supreme in the first two weeks of June. The Amigo 1 fruit has bluish-red skin and red-tinged yellow flesh. The 40-45 sized fruit delivers a good flavor that is reminiscent of its plum parent with more tartness than most any other Pluot® (16 ºBrix). The tree's growth habit is vigorous and upright. A pollenizer such as Emerald Gem, Flavor Supreme or Dapple Dandy is required. Estimated chilling requirement 700 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 20165)
Introduced as a fertile, late-season pollenizer, the Amigo 2 Pluot® ripens in mid-to-late July with red skin and flavorful, orange flesh (18 ºBrix). Amigo 2 features good size (average weight 136.3 grams) and nice storage and shipping qualities. The Amigo 2 tree has a vigorous, upright growth habit and requires a pollenizer such as Rubirosa, Holiday or Flavor Fall. Estimated chilling requirement 750-800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 17832)
Named for its remarkably dark skin color, the Black Kat Pluot® interspecific plum exhibits firm flesh, sweet flavor (20 ºBrix) and large size (30-35). It is an extra-late bloomer that ripens in the first week of September and holds well on the tree until harvest. The Black Kat tree is vigorous and productive. A pollenizer such as Hiromi Red, Royal Treat, Flavor Heart, Rubirosa, Santa Rosa or Flavorfall is required. Estimated chilling requirement 1000 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 13134)
The ever-sweetening Candy Stripe Pluot® interspecific plum delivers a delicious tart flavor when picked in late July, but let it hang on the tree and this fruit will sweeten dramatically during its three-week harvest window (16.3 ºBrix at maturity/first harvest). The medium, pink-yellow striped fruit is firm and juicy with an average weight 121.5 grams. Candy Stripe requires a pollenizer such as Flavorfall. Estimated chilling requirement 800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 17828)
Derived from the Crimson Heart Pluot® interspecific plum, Coparose offers a much more appealing shape (spherical to slightly oblate) without the tips that its Pluot® parent sometimes bears. The smooth yellow to red exterior hides firm golden flesh and a flavor that is not overly sweet (15 ºBrix). The Coparose Pluot® ripens in mid-July with an average size of 125 grams. The vigorous tree requires a pollenizer such as Amigo 2, Crimson Royale, Dapple Dandy or Honey Punch. Estimated chilling requirement 600 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 20173)
The Crimson Heart Pluot® interspecific plum is named not only for its distinctly heart-like shape, but for its beautiful ruby red flesh. With soluble solids of 15 ºBrix, Crimson Heart features a balanced flavor that is not overly sweet. The productive tree yields medium-sized fruit (127.8 gram average weight). A pollenizer such as Earliqueen, Joanna Red, Hiromi Red, Dapple Dandy or Crimson Glo is required. Estimated chilling requirement 700 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 12943)
Heavy setting fruit with beautiful red flesh and skin. Its great firmness makes it ideal for shipping. Ripens around July 10th (Modesto, CA), approximately 25 days after Flavor Fusion. Estimated chilling requirement 800 hours. Self-sterile, pollenizer required. U.S. Plant Patent No. 26204
The hallmark of Crimson Royale Pluot® interspecific is an elongated shape similar to an apricot. Excepting shape, this Pluot® is more reminiscent of a plum with tangy red skin and sweet, orange flesh that suggests a complex mixture of apple and plum flavors (23 ºBrix). This firm Pluot® sizes well (30-35) and offers a smooth, crunchy texture that holds up well in storage and shipping. Crimson Royale matures from the last week of July and into August. A pollenizer such as Flavorfall, Amigo 2 or Honey Punch is required. Estimated chilling requirement 800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 18559)
Sold in stores as "Dinosaur Egg®," the large, firm Dapple Dandy Pluot® interspecific plum has a distinctive skin color that is pale green to yellow with red mottling. By traditional standards, the skin is unattractive, a fact that will be quickly forgotten after one taste of the creamy pink flesh. Dapple Dandy matures in late July with a spicy, plum-apricot flavor and a good acid to sugar balance (17 ºBrix). The very productive, spreading tree is pollenized by Flavor Queen Pluot®, Flavor Supreme Pluot®, Santa Rosa plum or Burgundy plum. Estimated chilling requirement 400-500 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 9254)
Similar in appearance to Dapple Dandy, the Dapple Fire Pluot® features darker red flesh and a harvest time in mid-July. With 17.5 ºBrix, Dapple Fire offers a balanced, apricot flavor and juicy flesh (142 gram average weight). The vigorous, upright Dapple Fire tree requires a pollenizer such as Flavorfall, Flavor Grenade or Sierra Rose. Estimated chilling requirement 700 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 12409)
The sweetest of the Dapple-type Pluot® varieties, Dapple Jack resembles Dapple Dandy with red to green dappled skin and remarkably sweet red flesh (21 ºBrix). Dapple Jack matures in mid-July about three weeks before Dapple Dandy. The Dapple Jack tree produces large crops of large fruit (40-45) and requires a pollenizer such as Honey Punch or Amigo 2. Estimated chilling requirement 600 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 18178)
Like most Pluot® varieties in the "Dapple" series, Dapple Supreme shows a mottled green and red exterior, but this variety features darker red flesh reminiscent of a Flavor Supreme. Dapple Supreme ripens alongside Early Dapple in the last two weeks of June with good size (142 gram average weight) and appealing eating qualities (15 ºBrix). The tree requires a pollenizer such as Flavor Gold. Estimated chilling requirement 300 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 16412)
More cosmetically attractive than the Dapple Dandy variety, Early Dapple Pluot® interspecific plum has speckled red skin that is thinner and softer than Dapple Dandy. Early Dapple ripens in the last two weeks of June with flavorful pink flesh (16.4 ºBrix). The tree is a regular heavy producer of large-sized fruit (153 gram average weight). This Pluot® requires a pollenizer such as Crimson Heart, Dapple Fire, Flavor Heart or Flavor Grenade. Estimated chilling requirement 700 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 13530)
Beautifully colored dark red skin with matching flesh. Produces large fruit with a balance of sweet and acidic flavor. Bold flavors and durable flesh allow for superb packing quality. Ripens mid to late June. Estimated chilling requirement 600 hours. Pollenizer required, Honey Punch Pluot® recommended. U.S. Plant Patent No. 24055
It may be little, but this fruit is indeed a gem. Emerald Gem Pluot® is a good farmer's market selection that cannot be grown commercially due to its diminutive size (101.7 gram average weight). The green-to-yellow skinned fruit has golden yellow flesh, a crunchy texture, and an extraordinarily sweet flavor (20 ºBrix). Emerald Gem Pluot® requires a pollenizer such as Flavorosa, Honey Punch, or Amigo 2. Estimated chilling requirement 700 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 14599)
The beautiful Fall Fiesta Pluot® interspecific plum is a late-season treat. Maturing in the last two weeks of September, the Fall Fiesta features blue-black skin over yellow flesh that holds firm on the tree up to two weeks. Fall Fiesta Pluot® is a sweet, juicy fruit with an average of 20 ºBrix, sizing 35-40. This semi-cling variety requires a pollenizer and has a winter chilling requirement of approximately 800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 22428)
A highly successful 2012 Pluot® introduction, Festival Red is a large, firm, flavorful, red-fleshed clingstone with attractive dark red skin, harvesting mid June. Firm-ripe fruit has a good acid-sugar balance, averaging 15 ºBrix. In trials, Festival Red has stored well for three weeks. Semi-spreading growth habit, regular bearing. Estimated chilling requirement 600 hours. Pollenizer required. (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 23788)
A complex interspecific plum, Flavor Blast is very sweet, averaging 26 ºBrix when firm ripe, with a good balance of acid and sugar. The fruit is medium size, with skin bright red over yellow and a round to slightly elongated shape. Its yellow clingstone flesh is crisp and meaty, offering excellent eating quality. Rated very firm, Flavor Blast has good handling, storage and shipping qualities. Harvest approximately September 1-15. Self-sterile, pollenizer required. Estimated chilling requirement 700 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 23720)
An attractive red-skinned Pluot® harvesting in the early season, Flavor Fusion features medium to large fruit with firm, red flesh and very good acidic-sweet flavor. A pollenizer is required. Estimated chilling requirement 650 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent Pending)
Flavor Grenade is admittedly an unusual-looking fruit, thus the somewhat humorous name. Harvested in the first two weeks of August, Flavor Grenade features good size (35-40) and a crunchy texture much like an apple. Even when fully ripe, it maintains an unmistakable crunch. As the name suggests, this green Pluot® is oblong in shape and has explosive flavor, tropical-sweet at 22 ºBrix. The pink to red blush is most pronounced in colder climates. Flavor Grenade hangs well on the tree (up to 6 weeks). Pollenized by Betty Anne plum, Flavorfall Pluot® or Candy Stripe Pluot®. Estimated chilling requirement 500 to 600 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 12097)
Flavor Heart is aptly named, having dark ruby to jet-black skin color and a very pronounced heart-like shape. This is a very large Pluot® with delicious yellow flesh. Harvesting in mid-August, the fruit ripens quickly and has a short shelf life. Flavor Heart requires a pollenizer such as Amigo 2, Black Kat, Flavorfall or Hiromi Red. Estimated chilling requirement 800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 10608)
When fruit is almost too beautiful to eat it should have a special name; thus the Flavor Jewel Pluot®. The glossy lime skin blushed with ruby red on this heart-shaped fruit demands attention, as does its succulent blonde flesh. Harvested in the 2nd week of August, this medium-to-large Pluot® (158.7 gram average weight) is firm and sweet (18 ºBrix). The vigorous, upright tree requires a pollenizer such as Flavor Heart, or Amigo 2. Estimated chilling requirement 850 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 13502)
Flavor King Pluot® is well known in farmer's markets where its memorable flavor commands recognition. This medium-sized, red fruit ripens in the 2nd week of August with a classic plum appearance on the exterior, but a deep red-to-purple flesh (18 ºBrix). The naturally small tree is moderately spreading and requires a pollenizer such as Flavor Supreme Pluot®, Santa Rosa plum or Late Santa Rosa plum. Estimated chilling requirement 400 to 500 hours.
Flavor Queen harvests in August when the fruit begins to turn from green to bright yellow. This Pluot® is one of the sweetest of all Pluot® varieties, but cannot be sold to retail stores due to a skin so tender the fruit must be harvested with gloves. The large fruit is light-green to yellow, with golden flesh that is firm and juicy. Flavor Queen is sweet with a slight apricot aftertaste and very little tartness (18 ºBrix). Pollenized by Dapple Dandy Pluot®, Flavor Supreme Pluot®. Not pollenized by Flavor King Pluot®. Estimated chilling requirement 400-500 hours.
Attractive red skin color and a very sweet flavor (19.2 °Brix) make the Flavor Rouge Pluot® an outstanding early season selection. Like its plum parent, Red Beaut, this Pluot® features firm, meaty flesh that holds nicely on the tree and ships well. Flavor Rouge requires a pollenizer and has a winter chilling requirement of approximately 500 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 16491)
An outstanding early-season Pluot®, Flavor Royale packages its crimson flesh in eye-catching maroon skin. Nearly three weeks earlier than Flavor Supreme, Flavor Royale ripens from the last week of May into early June and upstages the original Pluot® (Flavor Supreme) with an artful exterior and a sweet, juicy red flesh (18 ºBrix). Large size (153.4 gram average weight). Requires a pollenizer such as Amigo 1 or Flavorosa. Estimated chilling requirement 500 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 16413)
The first Pluot® introduced by Floyd Zaiger in 1988, Flavor Supreme disguised intense flavor under an arguably unattractive grey-green skin with red speckling. This medium-sized, moderately firm fruit still surprises first-time tasters with juicy Bordeaux-colored flesh so delicious it can only be called "supreme" (17 ºBrix). This variety can be difficult to set and is subject to cracking. Flavor Supreme requires a pollenizer such as Flavorosa Pluot®. Estimated chilling requirement 600-700 hours.
When apricot, Aprium® and plum varieties have all been harvested, what is left? The Flavorfall Pluot® is the answer to taste-lovers fall appetites. Harvesting in the last week of September and the 1st week of October, Flavorfall offers extra large size (25-30), smooth, maroon skin, golden flesh and a sweet, crisp flavor (17 ºBrix). This productive tree holds its firm fruit up to three weeks. Flavorfall requires a pollenizer such as Betty Anne, Rubirosa, Flavorite, Dapple Fire or Honey Punch. Estimated chilling requirement 800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 11990)
With soluble solids (ºBrix) of 20, Flavorite is one of the sweetest Pluot® selections. Flavorite matures in the first two weeks of August with red skin and medium to large size. The vigorous, semi-spreading tree requires a pollenizer such as Flavorfall. Estimated chilling requirement 700 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 11609)
A treat of the very early season, Flavorosa is a medium-sized Pluot® with beautiful, dark purple skin and red flesh. Resembling a plum, this fruit has much more concentrated flavor and juicy flesh (16 ºBrix). The moderately vigorous, spreading tree requires an early-blooming pollenizer such as Emerald Drop Pluot® or Mariposa plum. Estimated chilling requirement 400 to 500 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 10285)
The Gypzee Pluot® interspecific plum offers the exotic appearance of a heart-shaped maroon-to-purple fruit and sweet, pale flesh (average ºBrix of 17). This clingstone selection ripens in the last two weeks of July and is more resistant to heat damage than other commercial varieties. The Gypzee Pluot® requires a pollenizer and has a winter chilling requirement of approximately 900 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 19834)
The Honey Punch Pluot® ripens in mid to late August with very sweet, juicy flesh (19 ºBrix). The red-speckled fruit has heavy bloom on the skin and golden flesh with red streaking originating from the skin. Honey Punch is large (35-40), dense and firm to the touch; the fruit hangs well on the tree. The trees are heavy producers and require a pollenizer such as Ebony Rose, Crimson Royale or Dapple Jack. Estimated chilling requirement 700-800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 19596)
The gorgeous Ruby Kat is truly the color of the precious gem. This semi-heart-shaped Pluot® ripens in mid-to-late July with extraordinary size (30-35), flashy red skin and sweet, golden flesh (19 ºBrix) streaked with red from the skin. The vigorous, upright tree requires a pollenizer such as Flavorich. Estimated chilling requirement 800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 19619)
With a maturity window in mid-to-late May and an excellent mild, sweet flavor, Spring Flavor offers the best eating quality for the early fruit market (12 ºBrix). Spring Flavor has red-to-maroon skin and yellow flesh. Its average weight is 119.3. A pollenizer such as Flavorosa or Earliqueen is required. Estimated chilling requirement 450-500 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 14571)
Sunset Delight, a late-maturing complex interspecific plum, has an attractive appearance with mostly red over yellow skin. The fruit is large and firm with good acid-sugar balance and very good flavor, averaging 18.5 ºBrix. Harvested in September, the fruit has good handling, storage and shipping qualities. Self-sterile, pollenizer required. Estimated chilling requirement 800 hours. (U.S. Plant Patent No. 23983)
